Flame Test Experiment

Purpose: to demonstrate and classify the characteristics of a chemical reaction.

Objective: describe the difference between a physical and chemical change.

Post Lab Questions: 


1.) What indicators (at least 3) determine that a chemical change (or reaction) has occurred?

  • Color, the flame tests, solid to carbon dioxide in a gaseous state.
2.) What is emitted when a chemical change takes place in the flame test?

  • Different colors are shown from the different chemicals that are combine like barium c liquid alone is clear but poured into the flame made a light green color.

3.) What group, from the periodic table, do these elements exist?

  • Alkaline Earth Metals, Post Transition Metals, Alkaline Metals.

4.) Do any two elements give the same spectrum of color? Explain why?

  • Yes calcium c and sodium c both give the same spectrum of orange. I believe it's because at its original calcium and sodium they are like this silver and grey color so in the flame test they come off as the same color.

5.) Recall what a catalyst is in a chemical reaction.  What was the catalyst in these reactions?
  • A catalyst heat up a reactant, but in these reactant it is used as electricity (electrolysis) to separate water into elements.
